The city is one step closer to having a microdistillery with a tasting room.
Derek Ungerecht, who wants to make rum, has submitted an application to open Dead Reckoning Distillery at 312 W. 24th St., close to the Ghent and Park Place neighborhoods. The business is planned for a 3,200-square-foot warehouse.
Recently the state has relaxed regulations allowing the craft beer and craft spirit industries to flourish. Though liquor is usually sold in ABC stores, now distilleries can become “contract” stores and sell their products directly to customers.
The City Council also approved a measure earlier this year that would let a microdistillery sell bottled liquor to drink off site.
The proposal is scheduled for a public hearing with the Planning Commission in November. The council would vote on the application at a later time. Ungerecht said because he needs federal approval as well, he believes his business may not open until spring 2017.
